WHAT IS THE CORRECT POSTURE?

The ideal posture is achieved when the upper and lower body are perfectly aligned with the centre of gravity, the neck well centred on the shoulders, which should be relaxed and upright, the chest open, the abdomen flat and the pelvis, thighs and legs firmly on the ground below.6 The weight of the entire body should not be on the heels or the balls of our feet, but should be distributed evenly on both feet.

Try to stay straight, with a unifying sense of expansive lift and lightness, even as you walk and sit down. There are immense benefits to learning the art of staying harmoniously upright or maintaining a balanced posture during movement.

How to diagnose a bad posture

First, check the soles of your shoes. If they are more worn at the front, back or on the sides there may be a postural problem. Then, stand with your back against the wall. Slightly open your legs (feet in line with your shoulders), rest your buttocks and

shoulder (keeping them low) against the wall, in order to ‘open up the chest’. Now check if your head touches the wall. If it does not touch, there is a cervical vertebrae misalignment. Now, try to correct your posture by touching the wall with your head, stretching your neck, bending your chin slightly forward, without forcing. It is useful to imagine a wire from the base of the neck lifting you up: while the back of the neck elongates and the chin drops forward. Now breathe using your diaphragm. This is the correct posture.
